J’ai Mis le Feu – lyrics

J’ai Mis le Feu – by Paul Boissard, English translation by Barry Chern
(I have been trying to make this translation both literal and singable, which is of course impossible to those who know better.)

I lit the fire inside my brain,
It was the only way you know;
The rats who used to pick through the garbage of my pain,
Desert me, coughing up their lungs as they go.
And a large bird with smoking wings,
Flies from the ends of my hair;
The horses’ hooves ‘gainst my temples ring,
Hoping that’s the way out of the fire…
Gone, all is gone, there’s none of that here,
Your mouth, your smile, your eyes spitting flames;
Your whole face dissolving in tears,
Your hands applauding my going insane.
But nothing, no naught, right down to the bone,
Nothing lit by lightning, and no more,
But an empty shell all alone,
Floating too far from the shore.
Since then I’ve dreamt in the ash where I lay,
At least it’s cool, it’s really pretty good;
But I don’t understand to this day,
Just what became of the wolf from the wood.
The wolf who would hide inside a cabin,
When I was little it made me so scared;
I didn’t see him roasted in the fire,
I didn’t see him slink back to his lair.
He must be hiding somewhere beneath the bone,
Maybe that’s him who gnaws my teeth.
He’s bound to come back up into my dome,
Just to devour my childhood dreams;
The dreams of a child who played with matches,
Who played at Wild Indian and Leap of Death,
At killing birds, at being a Prophet
At eating both Man and Wolf! (or? At devourer of both Man and Wolf!)
